Statement of Dean Fisher re: Ad Hoc Committee on Externships

I want to thank all those students who have expressed their opinions on the subject of paid externships and a special thanks to those who have done research on this subject. In response to student advocacy for paid externships, I recently asked for faculty and staff volunteers to serve on a new Ad Hoc Committee on Externships. The faculty and staff members are those who volunteered to serve, and they are listed below.

The Committee is “ad hoc” because all our relevant permanent standing committees such as the Curriculum Committee have very full agendas. This ad hoc committee has been formed this semester to focus exclusively on this one important issue in order to give it the time and attention it deserves. I expect that the committee will make a recommendation directly to the faculty, and that the faculty will discuss and vote on the committee’s recommendation by the end of this spring 2024 semester.

There has been a request for some student membership on the ad hoc committee. We intend to seek and seriously consider meaningful student input, but I believe that we can best accomplish that objective by meeting with students as part of the Committee’s process rather than having 1-2 students appointed by the SBA to serve on the committee. Our process will be inclusive and transparent, and we intend to take full advantage of the work that has already done by students. I have recommended to the SBA that the SBA appoint a small committee of 3-5 students that our committee can meet with in addition to committee interactions we intend to have with all students interested in the subject.

My sincere thanks for the continued thoughtful, hard work on this issue by many students.
