Porco Lounge – the Place to Be

By: Sean Yeats

Ever need a break away from Law School but can’t afford a ticket to a tropical getaway? May I submit, for your consideration, Porco Lounge and Tiki Room on West 25th.

Porco is a high-end cocktail bar and a tiki bar. High-end means the bar makes drinks with high quality spirits and house-made fresh ingredients, at a bit higher prices. The tiki part means these cocktails have tons of fresh fruit and plenty of booze in addition to bringing some far-away flavors right to Cleveland. Walk through that door, and you’ll feel instantly transported to another land. I often head over while the sun still shines and read books on the gorgeous patio.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Sean, I don’t have money for nice things – I’m a poor law student!” And I hear you there. At Porco everything is the same price and if you need the good ol’ mind eraser from some case you read in Crim, there are cocktails with plenty of booze! The Zombie is at the top of the charts for booze in the whole city, sporting over five ounces of 100 proof liquor; there's a limit of two per customer because no one needs a third zombie. To put that another way, a Zombie is like drinking two Long Islands at the same time while doing a shot on top. Once you look at it that way, 18 bucks doesn’t look too bad, especially for the higher quality you’ll get.

Another nice thing about having fresh and high-quality ingredients is that there are no additives, no corn starches, nothing artificial and no BS. Not only can you taste the difference of a real house-made product but you’ll wake up the next morning feeling better! Better booze and fresh ingredients are always better for you than the artificial stuff.

There are lots of great drinks over there and a massive collection of Rum. Some of my favorites are:

-The Painkiller. Like a dark Pina Colada, you’ll get big flavors out of our house coconut cream, pineapple, orange, and blend of rum.

-The Hurricane. This IS your grandad’s Hurricane! House grenadine, passion fruit, lemon and lots of rum will have you running for shore in no time.

-The Saturn. A lovely combination of passion fruit, lemon, falernum (a house-made infused and sweetened rum liqueur), orgeat (a house almond syrup), and gin. This will turn any gin-hater around on the spirit or I’ll pay for it myself!

-And of course, the Zombie. With 14 ingredients, expect it to be tart, bitter, spiced, spirit-forward, and complex. They say the Zombie is not fit for the living!

Tell ‘em “Big Country” sent ya. Heck, let me know when you’re headed up and I’ll buy you a drink!
